Note to self: Never fall in love.

For years now I’ve lived a pretty paperless life (aside from my addiction to print magazines). From paying bills to sketching design concepts. My most recent/current method of sketching out design thoughts and ideas is on my iPad, on one of my note or doodle apps. But with all the gadgets that I use and love, I still missed the feeling of the pen bringing my ideas to life on actual paper. So I picked up this leather journal from Papyrus, sketched a design on paper, produced a great design as a result, and it felt good. Call me old school but I’m bringing non-virtual sketching and writing back into my life.

The St. Valentine’s Day Grinch

First of all, I don’t have anything against love, or being in love, or showing love or affection.

Secondly, in my opinion, “Valentine’s Day”, as it’s commonly referred to, has nothing to do with love, or being in love, or showing love or affection.

So to me, today isn’t “Valentine’s Day”, it’s February 14.  Let me tell you why.

Please Misunderstand Me

Just yesterday I posted the following tweet:

It was just a random thought that came to mind.  It’s been over a year now since I decided to pursue my passions full time and start to live my dreams.  Someone who really inspires me but whom I think is often misunderstood is Kanye West.  Some say he’s arrogant, egotistical, etc.  But I just say he’s misunderstood.  He’s living his dreams and he’s not afraid to be himself regardless of what people think.

There’s nothing wrong with thinking that you’re great.  If you don’t believe in yourself, who else will?!

Just today he posted the following statement on his blog in his typical all caps typing.  You may not agree, you may not understand… but I do.  Again I say… I’d rather be misunderstood than easily figured out and categorized.

How Necole Bitchie Helped Me Get A MacBook Pro

About a month ago one of my mentors (though she doesn’t know it, haha), Necole Bitchie, tweeted a link to a story she wrote about the ‘law of attraction’ and how it changed her life.  I had already heard of ‘the secret’ years ago from one of my previous business mentors and was already familiar with the process of visualizing and the power that thoughts have on framing our lives.  I already knew about making vision boards and writing down goals and things like that, but I never did anything to put it into action myself because I thought I already had enough faith.  I never did anything to tangibly create a mental reality the way that I did this last time I read Necole’s story.  Once I did, I had something I had been desiring and ‘believing for’ for years within a matter of days… my very own MacBook Pro.

Bad Business: How I Almost Got Swindled & How You Can Avoid It

Today as I woke up I followed my usual routine. The first thing I do each morning is pull my iPhone from under my pillow and check the new texts, emails, missed calls, and voicemails. At first glance, nothing was unusual. 13 new emails, a couple texts, a few missed calls. Since the number of emails was the greatest, I went to my inbox to read them. What I found there was somewhat shocking though not surprising to me.  Apparently I was very close to being caught up and swindled in a business deal with a criminal. This is what happened, and how I avoided it. Hopefully you can take the principles I used and apply them to your own business dealings. I won’t go into the specifics of the particular deal because the principles are universal.

To make this long and perhaps boring story very short and get to the good stuff; the email I received included a report that this man whom I had befriended, met with, ate with, even visited with in his home, was arrested last night in San Francisco after a “nationwide manhunt”.  He had previously been convicted of kidnapping, robbery, grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and was out on parole from a 15-life sentence handed down in the 80’s. Many people whom we met with ended up doing business with him, including a very well known actor who is currently starring on a primetime show on ABC, and other business owners around the uptown Dallas area. I ended up walking away from the deal because of a gut feeling but there were 3 principles or “red flags” that stood out and prevented me from conducting any business with this wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Oh iPhone, How I Love Thee - By Eric D. Wills

It was a warm spring day. Birds were chirping, the breeze was blowing. I walked into the AT&T store not knowing what to expect but with my mind intent on giving you a try.

We had one previous encounter when you first came to town. I saw you, touched you, but wasn’t impressed. I went around bragging on my love affair with halleberry and how it pleased me to touch her buttons and stroke her trackball. Thoughts of you were always in the back of my mind but me and my berry went so far back, shared so many precious memories together.

But this one day it all changed. You turned my world upside down. I decided to give you a chance and I don’t regret it. I signed the papers and you were mine. I rushed home to be with you. I touched you in a way that was never even possible with halleberry. I slid my fingers across your smooth surface and slowly inserted my headphones. I remember the first time like it was yesterday.

What you have to offer on the inside is just as beautiful as you are on the outside. Think of all the memories we’ll share together, 16 gigabytes worth. Oh iPhone, how I love thee.

Why Tiger Woods Is Still My Hero - By: Eric D. Wills

25 years ago a baby boy was born. His father was black (african-american), his mother was hispanic (mexican-american). His only concerns were breathing, eating, sleeping. He had no idea he’d face his childhood years wondering who and even what he was due to continually being bombarded with a peculiar question: “What are you?” Eventually he would learn that these seemingly innocent children were questioning his ethnicity or race. He would also come to realize how prevalent this subject would be in him establishing and appreciating his identity; his place in the world. The boy was me. What that story has to do with Tiger Woods and why he is still my hero, I will now attempt to explain.
